NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Three-Dimensional Representations of Hexagonal Ice Crystals and Hail Particles of Elliptical Cross Sections

چکیده
Mathematical expressions based on earlier ideas of the author are given to describe the three-dimensional surfaces of hexagonal ice crystals and conical graupel and hail particles. In the former class, the expressions closely parallel the expression for prolate spheroid but the cross section is transformed into a hexagon by an expression designed previously. A special transformation containing a preset constant, «, is implemented so that the three-dimensional, instead of two-dimensional, surface of the crystal is described. In the case of conical particles with elliptical cross sections, the equation that describes a conical body of revolution is modified to describe conical bodies with elliptical cross sections.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Characterization of Ice Crystals in Clouds by Simple Mathematical Expressions Based on Successive Modification of Simple Shapes
The technique based on the concept of successive modification of simple shapes using elementary mathematical functions to represent the shape and size of ice crystals in clouds is discussed. Two hypothetical samples of ice crystals, a single-habit sample of hexagonal plates and a multihabit crystal sample, are generated using a formula developed previously to illustrate the use of this techniqu...
متن کاملNotes and correspondence: Rayleigh scattering by hexagonal ice crystals and the interpretation of dual-polarisation radar measurements
Dual-polarisation radar measurements provide valuable information about the shapes and orientations of atmospheric ice particles. For quantitative interpretation of these data in the Rayleigh regime, common practice is to approximate the true ice crystal shape with that of a spheroid. Calculations using the discrete dipole approximation for a wide range of crystal aspect ratios demonstrate that...
متن کاملNotes and correspondence: Origin of the Parry arc
Laboratory experiments to determine the preferred orientation of free-falling hexagonal prisms were performed at Reynolds numbers appropriate to falling ice crystals in the atmosphere. Hexagonal plates orient with their c axis vertical for aspect ratios < 0.9, whilst hexagonal columns fall with their c axis horizontal. A secondary alignment is also observed: regular hexagonal columns fall prefe...
متن کاملSome notes on the characterization of two dimensional skew cyclic codes
A natural generalization of two dimensional cyclic code ($T{TDC}$) is two dimensional skew cyclic code. It is well-known that there is a correspondence between two dimensional skew cyclic codes and left ideals of the quotient ring $R_n:=F[x,y;rho,theta]/_l$. In this paper we characterize the left ideals of the ring $R_n$ with two methods and find the generator matrix for two dimensional s...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Refined Supercell and Tornado Forecast Parameters
This note updates a previous study that utilized a baseline climatology of soundings associated with large hail, significant tornadoes, and 10 or more cloud-to-ground lightning flashes from 1992. Expanding on the earlier analysis, it is shown that three modified forecast parameters have more value in distinguishing between environments that favor significant tornadoes and those that favor large...
